British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
